It's been two hectic, chaotic, whirlwind of months since I last updated the story, and for that I apologize! It's just been a little crazy, but finally, finally I can get back to writing! Just a short piece to start off, but expect longer ones!
"Wait!" cried Laura, suddenly leaping from Moondust, putting her shield to one side. "What is it?" wondered the mare, anticipating another enemy. "The Golden Bane," the girl spluttered. "It disappeared along with you! It has to be here somewhere..." Laura began scanning the clearing wildly. "In all the time I've been here, I haven't seen it," the pegasus stated. "But it's definitely here," said Laura. "How else could it perform such magic if the bottle wasn't actually near by?" She began prodding around the trees that had kept Moondust prisoner. Perhaps it was hidden in a knothole or maybe an animal... Suddenly Laura stopped, and her eyes lit up. She raced over to the remains of the animated bear, and dug through the pile of prickly brambles and branches. She felt something cold and smooth, and pulled it out of the mess. Smiling triumphantly, she made her way back to Moondust, the Golden Bane in hand. "Found it," she smiled. "Wonderful!" answered Moondust, and she beat her wings excitedly, eager to get out of this place and take to the skies.
Laura stomach jolted as Moondust launched into the air. It had felt so long since the girl had been among the clouds, she had almost forgotten the feeling. She reveled in the joy and wonder, recalling what it was like to see the world from above. They flew over the mass of thickets and brambles that Laura had had to make her way through when coming to Moondust's rescue and has the vegetation thinned, the girl spotted a large, black mass that she was certain was Gryffin. Moondust hovered in the air before descending to greet the wolf who still sat almost exactly where Laura had left him. "You stayed," Laura remarked, climbing off of the pegasus. "I told you I would," answered Gryffin, his tail twitching ever so slightly. He turned his intense gaze to Moondust. "Welcome back," he said. "Thank you," replied the mare. "For everything; for keeping her safe." "I have seen her. Laura is strong enough to handle herself. Nevertheless, it was a pleasure to...catch up," responded Gryffin. Moondust gave Laura a quizzical look. "I'll tell you on the way back," the girl promised. "Goodbye," said Gryffin. "And try not to lose that shield." "For once you actually tell us you're leaving instead of disappearing," Laura noted, smiling. "Don't get used to it," the wolf quipped, before turning tail and loping off into the clutches of the forest. Laura clambered back on to Moondust, ensuring the Golden Bane was still tucked safely into her bookbag. In one hand she grasped the shield and in the other, the silky mane of her friend. As the pegasus soared into the vast expanse that was the sky, Laura was enveloped in a sense of comfort, knowing that they were finally heading back towards Rolandsgaard Castle and away from everything chaotic. And though she knew that the chaos would no doubt find her again, she appreciated the moment.
"Have you decided what we will do with the potion?" Moondust asked. "I think it would be best in the hands of Sara,"answered Laura. The sun began to dip into the horizon, casting its rich light in a vibrance of soft pinks and deep oranges; almost as if the sky itself was celebrating the reunion of girl and horse. Laura's lids were becoming heavy as Moondust's gentle wingbeat, the warm sun on her face, and the soft breeze that brushed her face, began to lull her to sleep. Suddenly, the girl felt exhausted. But she willed herself to stay awake, knowing she owed her friend the recount of her journey. Also, she reminded herself, if she were to fall asleep, Laura would probably loose her grip on the shield, sending it to plummet to its destruction on the earth below. Thankfully, the mare's wonderful company helped to keep her from slipping into sleep.

Moondust flew swiftly and tirelessly. Covering vast distances in such an incredible amount to time that Laura spotted Trail's End before dusk had finished settling in place of the late afternoon sky. As they soared ever closer to Rolandsgaard Castle, the inviting, warm light that spilled through the windows made the girl feel even happier to be back; where she could finally have a good, long sleep and slip beneath the comfortable blankets knowing that Moondust was near and safe. But, Laura knew, she'd have to settle a few things before she finally got her chance to sleep. Finally, Moondust circled over Wind's Eye and descended into the castle where an anxious group awaited them comprised of Emma, Wings, Sara and Bella. Emma cried out in joy when she had spotted the pale blue mare alighting down the meet them; Sara was beaming; a graceful figure in a summer, blue dress. The mare's hooves clattered against the floor as she landed. Laura climbed off of Moondust and just managed to deposit her shield on the ground before Emma had smothered her in a hug. "You did it!" she exclaimed. "I mean, we knew you had it in you, but of course we were still worried!" Emma finished, stepping back to let Laura breathe. "Well done," Sara smiled. "You have succeeded in proving your courageousness, determination and strength once again," added Bella. "Thank you," said Laura. "But I did have help." "You did?" questioned Emma. "Gryffin. He really helped me. I don't think I would have made it very far without him." Laura answered. "Didn't the inscription say something against having company?" Emma asked. Laura was about to explain, but couldn't manage to stifle a yawn. "It's probably a long story," Sara put in. "And it would benefit us all if Laura was more awake to tell it." "Go now, and sleep. You two definitely deserve it," Bella said. Laura looked up at the winding staircase and searched within herself to find the will to climb it. Just as she was about to take an exhausting step forward, a warm muzzle nestled against her neck. "I'll take care of it," the mare assured. The next thing Laura knew, she had somehow slid onto Moondust's back. The pegasus ascended through Wind's Eye and glided gently into the open archway and into their room. Sleepily, Laura managed to slip into her nightgown, and soon she had lost herself beneath the covers of the bed; deep in a sea of peaceful dreams.

Amidst Laura's soothing reveries, a vivid vision appeared. Of all things, the beautiful, intricately crafted shield the girl had found in the abandoned cottage came into focus. The shining metal seemed to gleam, emanating a silver-purple aura. Then, the tree insignia on the bottom unraveled, and somehow its branches untangled to form an E. No sooner had that happened, than an image of a Ballad, that was not quite hers, flashed into being. The vision ended, and Laura was once again returned to the gentle caress of dreams. Rich, golden light met the girl's eyes when she awoke. It must be quite late in the day. She stretched luxuriously before hopping out of bed. Moondust was nowhere to be found, and for a moment, Laura thought that the mare might still be trapped and her rescue had all been some sort of dream. But she soon dismissed this as her mind detected the presence of the mare somewhere on the grounds below. Lunch was not ready in her room, so eating arrangements must have been made downstairs, probably in the ballroom. Laura opened her bureau and changed into a sky blue t-shirt with slightly puffed sleeves and gem-like beading around the edges and pulled on a pair of jeans. Something glinted on the corner of her dresser; a book. As the girl walked up to it, she discovered it wasn't just any book, but a Ballad. The dream-vision Laura had had came rushing back to her, triggered by this object. It matched the one she had seen in her head. Was this...could this be her Ballad? It was after all, sitting in her room, and she had lost hers somewhere along the way of Moondust's rescue. She picked up the book, and golden letters gleamed: Ballad of Laura Elindor. So, it was hers... But this Ballad looked different; it had a clasp in the center of the front made of pure silver, (she wasn't sure how she had identified the metal so quickly) pressed with designs of leaves on it, and from the clasp, metallic silver vines crept horizontally; wrapping around the book, and preventing anyone from opening past the velvet cover. Laura searched for a keyhole of any kind, but failed to locate one. Running her fingers along the metal, she felt a deeper indentation, and seemingly out of nowhere, when she lifted her fingers, a marking that looked like a teardrop was deeply pressed into the middle of the clasp. Small branches adorned with tiny leaves appeared to grow out of the teardrop. It was so detailed that Laura was sure that if she had a magnifying device, she could have seen the vein lines on each leaf. What had happened to her Ballad? Looking for answers, the girl took the Ballad with her as she made her way downstairs.
She entered the ballroom to find a long, rectangular dining table, clothed in light purple. There was a marvelous feast of colourful fruits, seasoned meats and decadent desserts. Sara looked up from her plate, which was laden with some type of rainbow-mottled berry. "Good afternoon Laura!" she exclaimed. "Good afternoon Sara," Laura returned. The girl took a seat near where Moondust stood alongside Wings. "What's that you have, Laura?" Emma asked, who was sitting beside her. "It's my Ballad...I think," she answered. "Of course it is," Sara affirmed. "Why wouldn't it be?" "I don't remember this on it," Laura remarked, indicating the clasp. "Since the lock has appeared, it means you must be able to find the key," Bella replied. "So, what you're saying is I won't be able to open my Ballad again until I find the key?" Laura poses, putting fruits and other wonderful food onto her plate. "Yes," said Sara. The girl thought about what this could mean; with everything that was happening, and the significant things that were imminent, she needed to be able to keep track of everything as soon as she could; there wouldn't be time to sit down and bring it up to date for a long time. So, the sooner she found it, the better. "What does the key look like? I couldn't find a keyhole," Laura stated. "The key is different for every Valkyrie. Unique to each one," the goddess enlightened. "Don't worry, you'll figure it out." "Before I go looking," Laura began, she pulled out the Golden Bane from her bookbag, "I think it would be in better hands with you." "Thank you," Sara nodded gratefully, taking the powerful cordial into her hands. "We will do all we can to assure this does not fall into the hands of the likes of Feral," Bella promised. The goddess stood up from her chair, and left with Bella cantering faithfully by her side; the pinnacle of friendship. ""When I was unlocking Sigga's Ballad," Emma said, bringing Laura back from her thoughts. "It turned out her key was actually a petal from the amethyst orchid that had decorated her shield. If that helps at all..." Laura's eyes lit up, emblazoned with an idea. Emma's words had reminded her of the vision she had had. "The shield!" she exclaimed, leaping up from her seat and streaking up the stairs, Emma in tow, back to her room where it stood by her bed. Wings and Moondust appeared on the ledged archway and both alighted beside the two girls. Laura studied the tree symbol on the shield. The more she looked at it, the more she realized that the tree did look like a calligraphic E. Studying it more carefully, she came to the conclusion that instead of the tree designed to look like an E, it might have been that the E had been designed to look like a tree. "You think your key is in the shield too?" wondered Emma. "No. But I have a feeling that it will help me to find it...for some reason," Laura explained. "And a good reason too," a lilting voice that could only belong to Sara stated. Quiet as anything, she had somehow appeared at the doorway to Laura's room, Bella peeking over her shoulder. "After all, that shield did belong to your father."
